Jacob’s Pillow – Inside/Out

I’ve been shooting this past week at Jacob’s Pillow. As many of you know, I was the Festival Photographer last summer and they have invited me to photograph here again during their 75th Season. The Pillow is a magical place. Everywhere you turn there is more to discover. It’s a photographer’s dream

In addition to the two main stages, there is an outdoor stage called Inside/Out. The Pillow offers FREE performances Wednesday through Saturday at 6:30. (There are more than 200 FREE events at the Pillow every summer.) The stage is surrounded by the forrest and there’s a mystical feel of the performers dancing in the woods. The sun sparkles through the trees. You can see the sky and the clouds. The audience is filled with people of all ages. People bring picnics to share. There are kids running around. It’s interactive. There is as much happening off stage as there is on. You’ve got to come this summer and check it out!

I love shooting there because it’s hugely challenging. The lighting changes quickly, people step in front of my frame and it’s so much more than just dancing. I’m always looking for a way to capture it all! It’s great fun.

Here are a few images of Inside/Out from the past week:

Here’s my partner in photography (shooting at Inside/Out), Pillow Intern, Maxwell Citizen Kepler. Citizen just had a photo in the NY Times. Way to go Citizen! (He’s a Cannon shooter, but I still think he’s cool.)

Dannah & Mike in Malibu, CA

I can’t remember having as much fun at a wedding as I did at Dannah and Mike’s last weekend. The two of them treated me like an honored guest and I really apprecitate that. And the sense of humor was so right on and so inclusive, it was a joy for everyone! There were heartfelt tender moments and many moments of fun and play.

Thanks you guys for such a great weekend and for bringing me out to Cali to photograph your wedding day!

Nothin’ like Good Friends

I spent an extra day on my trip to California so I could visit my friend Elizabeth. We met doing a Vision Fast at the School of Lost Borders 10 years ago almost to the day. I’ve always admired Elizabeth for her keen listening, gentle wisdom and brilliant insights. She’s so smart and so loving. It’s been such a blessing to have her in my life!

The girl with the Golden Flute

A few nights ago I had a fun opportunity to make pictures of a tremendous musician, flautist Heather Holden. Heather, my wife Nel’s cousin, asked Nel to assist her in applying for the 2006 Haynes International Flute Competition by making a video of her performance. Well Heather won the competition and the top prize, a Golden Flute!! In addition to her internationally praised abilities on the flute, she’s super creative and fun to be around. You can see it in the pictures!
